Polignano a Mare

Post Card town on high cliffs over the sea

Think of blue clear water, rocky beaches, grottos. Polignano a Mare, on the east coast of Italy, is located just south of the city of Bari. The old town holds a dramatic location on sheer stone cliffs. The town appers to rise out of the water.

In the old town the buildings are all whitewashed and or stone, and there is a very attractive cathedral. The wines of Apulia, like its food, are strong and full-bodied side and held in high esteem since Roman times.

On our first visit we stayed along the water in one of the hotels. That was so handy to walk around the town in the evening. On later trips, and we have been here a number of times, we rented an agriturismo 10-15 minutes of the town. That gave us a peaceful location, with a pool, and we did not have to worry about the traffic congested streets of the town.

The town sits were the Greek city of Neapolis is reported to have been, and under the Romans, it was an important town on the Roman Via Traiana.

I have always enjoyed this town. The photography is excellent. More recently it hold another memory: the town where my car was stolen. That event put me through a grtat learning curve: finding the Police and the Carabiniere and after reporting the car stolen, figuring out how toget back to our agriturismo some 12 km outside of town. Having the car stolen on the first morning, half of the problem is I was not even sure where our agriturismo was located! But all worked out and we are heading back again.
